Visual Awareness Advisor Service

Visual Awareness Training

Visual Awareness Training aims to give people confidence in relating to those with sight difficulties and advice about sight loss issues and how they can most appropriately offer support. Our experienced trainer can deliver flexible and tailor made sessions at an agreed venue throughout Gloucestershire.

The benefits of visual awareness training are that it gives staff and volunteers confidence when meeting or talking with visually impaired people. A visually impaired person usually accompanies the trainer and is able to speak about their own experiences, which is always helpful to a sighted audience.

By directly involving visually impaired people in sessions staff and volunteer's experience and confidence levels are enhanced.

Training being offered presently includes any mix of the following:-

  • Use of a quiz which considers some of the myths and misconceptions people may have about blindness
  • Use of simulated spectacles and discussion about the range of sight conditions
  • Consideration of the emotional impact of sight loss
  • Practical session on how people can help, equipment that is available and the guiding skills
  • Information about the work of the association and others.

Customers have included the NHS and Primary Care Trust for Gloucestershire, Private Nursing and Residential Homes.
